Organzing a hackathon to find innovative solutions for coronavirus-related challenges? Count us in! Over the past weekend, our team took part in the EU vs Virus challenge, together with 9,000 more participants from all over the world.

We have recently shared with clients reports regarding the proliferating fake news about coronavirus. The epidemic has unleashed an outbreak of a disinformation epidemic that is proliferating as fast as the virus. Manipulative actors of all types have capitalized on this global health crisis, mobilizing with the goal of spreading fear and panic across social media, tapping into every possible facet of social and economic narratives. Significant ongoing campaigns range from healthcare and religious beliefs to economic impacts, xenophobia and scare tactics.

During the 3 days of the challenge, we developed CoviDashboard – a solution to monitor debunked claims about COVID-19 on Social Media. CoviDashboard works in 3 stpes:

  1. Monitor trending posts on social media
  2. Identify debunked claims on COVID-19 using Natural Language Processing
  3. Present suspect items in real time

CoviDashboard was selected by a panel of 5 jurors as a finalist, namely in the top 10%, highest ranked submissions of the challenge. While we fell short of winning the awards, we are encouraged by the great outcome we achieved and looking forward to follow up on the project and fight COVID-19 fake news with CoviDashboard.
